Winamac Park Board Continues Discussing Eagle Scout Projects

Eagle Scout projects continue to be considered by the Winamac Park Board. Board members Thursday voted to let Shawn Pratt install a gaga ball pit in Rhinehart Park, but they wanted to do more research before letting him add one to the Town Park.

Board Member Chris Schramm questioned whether the likelihood of flooding at the Town Park may make the new feature difficult to maintain. “That current will flow right across there, and if you’re in the back, if you’ve been back there after a flood, it just fills in with sand and dirt and leaves, limbs and everything,” Schramm said. Board Member Brad Zellers also wondered if the DNR would require a permit to add the pit to a flood-prone area.

The gaga ball pits aren’t the only Eagle Scout project being considered. Phillip Crippin is proposing to add a wheelchair-accessible swing. His proposal would include the frame, a single swing, and a concrete pathway. “I don’t think the demand would be high enough to try putting like two or three swings up, so I think just one would be a nice little thing we could add to the park and would bring a few people into town,” he said.

Crippin wants to place the swing near the existing playground equipment, close to existing ADA-accessible parking. He’s proposing a model where the entire wheelchair rolls onto the swing platform.

Board members agreed the proposal would be a good idea but wanted to do more research before making a final decision.
