Accessibility Improvements along U.S. 35 in Winamac May Have Led to Increase in Road Flooding

Efforts to make some of Winamac’s sidewalks more accessible to those with disabilities may have instead made it more difficult for everyone to get around. An increase in flooding on the newly repaved portions of U.S. 35 was noted during Monday’s town council meeting.

Town Manager Brad Zellers blamed the issue on the catch basins installed in front of the new ADA sidewalk ramps, as part of INDOT’s project. “So in order for those to be ADA-compliant, they put new grates on that have itty bitty fine openings, and they’re not taking water fast enough,” Zellers explained. “That’s something the state’s going to have to address.”

Not only has it led to an increase of water on the highway, according to Zellers, but it’s also pushing water onto the town’s streets. He said he’s contacted INDOT about the matter.
