A small airplane crash in Starke County Sunday evening left one person injured. The Starke County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 7:30 p.m. near U.S. 35 and County Road 800 South. When emergency crews arrived, they reportedly found a crop dusting plane in a field.Continue reading

Efforts to extend the Panhandle Pathway have finally gotten the support of the Pulaski County Commissioners. A motion to that effect was approved during last week’s meeting, on the condition that the plans meet the approval of local landowners. The first phase would extend the Panhandle Pathway north to the Tippecanoe River State Park. It would run alongside U.S. 35 for much of that length.Continue reading

A Knox gun shop plans to move to Star City, thanks to some financial help from Pulaski County. The county commissioners Monday approved a $19,500 revolving loan request from G&G Guns. “He has a purchase agreement on the former LightStream Bank building in Star City, moving the gun business from his storefront on U.S. 35 in Knox,” Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer explained. A crash on U.S. 35 in rural LaPorte County Wednesday morning sent one person to the hospital. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 7:20 just south of Schultz Road. Officers believe Rachel Tibbs, 67, of LaPorte, was driving south on U.S. 35 in a 2014 Ford SUV, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, traveled into a ditch, and overturned, coming to a rest on its roof.
A Pulaski County adventure park is drawing privacy concerns from some of its neighbors. McKenzie and John Forest live just north of Rugged Adventures, outside Winamac. Last week, they came to the county commissioners looking for help.

Starting today, Culver residents and commuters should be prepared for an ongoing road closure on State Road 17.
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that State Road 17 in Marshall County will be closed between State Road 8 and State Road 10 as crews perform chip sealing operations. U.S. 35 in Knox will get a new road surface in an INDOT project set to begin at the end of July.
A Beardstown homeowner will be allowed to replace an attached garage with a detached one. The Pulaski County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception Tuesday for a property in the 5600 block of North U.S. 35. It will allow homeowner John Cargo to build the new garage on a half-acre site, even though the county’s Unified Development Ordinance calls for at least an acre.
A resurfacing project is planned for U.S. 35 in Knox this summer.
Two state roads are back open now that flood waters have receded.
The Indiana Department of Transportation opened State Road 39 between State Road 10 and U.S. 30 and State Road 8 between U.S. 35 and State Road 39. The roads were closed when high water from historic flooding intruded on the roadways in late February. The Starke County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch Center confirmed that they received a call about a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 35 and 400 N at 6:17 p.m.
Officers from the Hamlet and Knox Police Departments also responded to the accident, along with members of the Knox and Hamlet Fire Departments. Dispatch reported that all medical units and two helicopters were also sent to the scene. INDOT recently began some rail road crossing repairs that will cause a closure impacting commuters and residents of Starke County.
Norfolk Southern Railroad Company is renewing and repairing a railroad crossing near Knox, causing the closure of State Road 8 between County Road N. 100 E. and County Road N. 200 E.
This closure will last from Monday, September 18th until Friday, September 29th. Norfolk will only be closing this section of State road 8 for railroad crossing rehabilitation. Continue reading
Road work is planned in La Porte County next week to increase safety on U.S. 20.
Indiana Department of Transportation crews will install rumble strips on U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and the U.S. 20 and State Road 2 intersection. Officials say engineers found a way to use equipment and resources from a nearby project on State Road 39 to install this safety enhancement on the heavily traveled highway.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is chip sealing another section of highway in Starke County. Starting today, State Road 39 will be closed between State Road 10 and State Road 8. Work is due to wrap up Friday, weather permitting.
