Starke County EMS Reports Successful Training

Starke County EMS Director Travis Clary told the commissioners last week that EMS personnel recently took part in a two-day Tactical Combat Casualty Course (TCCC) training session that he believed to be successful.

“The TCCC class was the military-based medic two-day course,” explained Clary.  “The staff really enjoyed it and I believe we all learned quite a bit in that course.   Tactical medicine and civilian medicine can be completely different, but in the hot zone we need to work as military medics at that point.  So, it was a great class and get hands-on with that.”

Clary has also conducted other training for departments.

“I held a CPR class for Golden Living Center in Knox.  We trained with Knox City Police Department and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department with K9 training and Dr. Lisa Booth from Vail Park Animal Hospital.  She came to give us another update on the care for our K9 officers if they become sick and injured. We treat these dogs just like a regular and even transport them, if needed, to the closest 24/7 hospital which is Westville for them.”

Clary added that the Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professional training for basic and advanced providers is coming up in the near future.  Clary hopes to work with La Porte Hospital to get providers certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program.

The Starke County EMS Department also met with Knox High School Athletic Trainer Maggie Long and the football team to review proper treatment of players and new football equipment.
