Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler presented an update to the Starke County Commissioners Tuesday night on his research into complaints about Jake Brakes in San Pierre.
He said decibel monitors are $200 apiece, but truck drivers would need to be monitored in order to determine if there is a violation of a noise ordinance, if enacted. The noise ordinance would be directed at Jake Brakes where a decibel level would need to be established and a fine attached to a violation. Once an ordinance was created, noise ordinance warning signs could be installed on U.S. 421 near San Pierre to alert truck drivers of the statute. The commissioners agreed that it would be hard to enforce and resources are not available for that option.
Another suggestion was made to adjust the speed limit in San Pierre to 30 mph and to move the speed limit signs further north and south of San Pierre so traffic can slow down prior to entering the town limits which could curb the use of Jake Brakes through town.
Ritzler said he will discuss the situation with officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation to see what solutions can be implemented.
