N.J.-S.P. School Board Approves Capital Projects, Bus Replacement, Crisis Plans

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board finalized a number of annual plans last month. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said the corporation’s crisis plan is similar those used by other schools. “It does have resources available in it, roles, responsibility, who’s responsible for different situations, and recommended protocols,” she explained.

Among the budget-related documents approved were the capital projects and bus replacement plans. Zupin said N.J.-S.P. plans to purchase three buses next year for an estimated cost of $330,000.

The school board also agreed to let the corporation transfer up to $1 million from the Education Fund to Operations Fund next year. It’s become a typical step for school corporations around Indiana.

The Education Fund is mainly used to cover teacher salaries and gets its money from the state. The Operations Fund covers most other expenses with funding from property taxes. But the Education Fund leaves out several items that used to be funded with state money under the old funding system, essentially requiring school corporations to move some of it to Operations.

Meanwhile, North Judson-San Pierre’s Teacher Appreciation Grant distribution policy will stay the same for another year. Stipends for teachers rated highly-effective will once again be 25-percent higher than those for teachers rated effective.
