The Winamac Park Board appears to have reached a solution to the Town Park’s pickleball problem. Rather than allowing the shared tennis and pickleball court to be re-equipped exclusively for pickleball, board president and pickleball player Jon Chapman suggested an idea to make it easier to have both sports.
“I would like the idea of having two more removable nets for pickleball by having four additional holes drilled where the tennis court exists and also have – and this was not my idea it was [board member Brad Zellers’] and it’s a great idea – two other holes drilled right along the fence, so when we take the tennis nets out, we can put those posts in those sleeves, so they’re not laying on the ground. They’re not going to cause a problem for someone.” Chapman explained. Board members agreed to try out that arrangement, during Thursday’s meeting. The pickleball players will supply the equipment, while town employees will install the necessary holes.
Chapman also suggested that pickleball players leave the court set up for tennis at the end of play each Friday until they need it again for pickleball, but Board Member Pat Bawcum didn’t think that was necessary. While the pickleball players in attendance Thursday were generally supportive of the arrangement, there were still some concerns that the nets would be hard for older players to move.
Chapman noted that keeping the shared court will eliminate the expense of having to move tennis somewhere else in the park.
