Over 100 people attended Wednesday’s Starke County Veterans War Memorial Plaza dedication ceremony. The plaza is located on the southeast corner of the Starke County Courthouse square at Washington and Pearl Streets in Knox.
Veterans hoisted the colors of the American flag as well as the five branches of the armed services, followed by words given by Starke County Veterans War Memorial Plaza committee member Mark Smith and Knox VFW Post #748 CommanderbBob Sims. A poem was read by Hunter Smith and then veteran, Committee Member and Knox City Council President Jeff Berg presented words for reflection and the names of all 100 soldiers enshrined on the memorial. A bell tolled for each name spoken.
A 21-gun salute was performed by honor guards from the VFW and American Legion Posts in Starke County and “Taps” was played by members of the VFW Honor Guard. The ceremony concluded with the playing of “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.
