Knox School Board Holds Off on Decision on Middle School Message Board

Rendering of proposed sign for Knox Middle School

More electronic signs may be coming to the Knox Community Schools campus. Back in March, the school corporation installed a message board at the corner of Main Street and Redskin Trail. Now, the Knox Board of Works has agreed to let the middle school add its own sign in the city’s right of way along Main Street.

Principal Jake Skelly explained that he wanted to highlight the school’s main entrance, “To actually have a sign that’s digital, that we can change on a daily basis with ease, that shows pictures, that recognizes our students, and recognizes our community.”

The sign had already gotten the approval of the board of zoning appeals with certain stipulations. Skelly said the sign would be turned off at 8:00 each night.

But Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart says the school board has decided to hold off on adding the sign into the school corporation’s building project. “The board felt that, with it being relatively early on yet in the building project, there may be some other things that might come up that we need to spend the money on,” Reichhart explains. “I think the sign cost was around $34,000.”

On top of that, Reichhart says the elementary and high schools are also looking into getting signs. The school board plans to revisit the idea next year.

Project Manager Brian Larson with Larson-Danielson Construction also told the board of works that the school corporation was interested in installing a raised crosswalk across Culver Road to connect the Weinberg Gym with the parking lot. Board members referred the idea to Street Superintendent Jeff Borg for further discussion.
