The Starke County Highway Department is preparing for the winter season, just in time for Winter Weather Preparedness Week!
Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the Starke County Commissioners last week that efforts are being made to prepare for the first snowfall.
“The sanders are on the trucks, salt and sand are full and ready, the brine has been ordered, plow blades are stocked fully, and the summer paving equipment has been moved to the Glove Factory,” said Ritzler. “I will never say again ‘bring on the snow’, but we are ready!”
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security encourages residents to be prepared for winter weather by putting together a preparedness kit. The kit should contain food and water for three days, a battery or hand-crank all-hazards radio, first aid kit, extra clothing, blankets, and personal hygiene items.
A readiness kit should also be packed in the car that includes a cell phone and charger for vehicle use, at least two blankets or a sleeping bag, a flashlight and extra batteries, emergency flares, extra coats, boots, hats and gloves, and an ice scraper.
