The dedication ceremony for the Starke County Veterans War Memorial is planned for Wednesday, November 11 at noon CT at the site on the southeast corner of the Starke County Courthouse square at Washington and Pearl Streets in Knox.
The committee worked hard to get the plaza ready for the Veterans Day service to honor all veterans in the county and in the nation.
The plaza features names of about 100 fallen Starke County soldiers that are etched in granite who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their county. A pedestal paying tribute to Starke County’s Medal of Honor winner, Frank Ono, also stands at the site.
The plaza features ADA accessibility for all to visit the memorial and seating for times of reflection.
The community’s generosity provided over $275,000 in funds to complete the project which included a patronicity matching grant through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority for $50,000. The community helped raise over $60,000 in order to secure those matching funds.
A luncheon that was to follow the dedication ceremony on Wednesday has been postponed until Memorial Day in 2021. However, patrons are welcome to come Wednesday for the dedication ceremony. Officials ask that attendees dress for an outdoor service, observe a social distance, and wear a mask for everyone’s safety.
