The Town of Hamlet is moving forward with a grant application for future upgrades to Indiana Avenue/Starke County Road 500 North. The town is coordinating with the Starke County Highway Department to apply for funding to widen and resurface the road from U.S. 35, through town, and to County Road 750 East.
Hamlet Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts said last week that the county has done the traffic counts and other preliminary work, but she has to finalize the town’s part of the application process. The town is also required to designate an ADA coordinator as a condition of receiving the federal funding distributed by INDOT. Pitts agreed to serve in that role, but the town council may still have to ratify that appointment, since it didn’t have a quorum during last week’s scheduled meeting time.
If approved, INDOT would cover 80 percent of the cost with federal funding, but the project probably wouldn’t take place until 2025.
