Three people were arrested in La Porte County Friday night following a traffic stop that resulted in the search and seizure of drugs and guns.
A La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a vehicle traveling west in the passing lane in the 3,000 West block of U.S. 20 and following a horse trailer too closely, according to the report. Police say the vehicle crossed the fog line and abruptly swerved back into the driving lane.
A traffic stop occurred that reportedly led to a search of the vehicle. Officers allegedly found a loaded 9mm handgun, a loaded .40 caliber handgun, and a large quantity of drugs.
As a result, the driver, 28-year-old Gregory E. Mitchell of South Bend, was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of dealing in a narcotic drug, and passenger Joellic R. Herron of Gary was arrested on preliminary felony charges of dealing in a narcotic drug and serious violent felon in possession of a handgun. Another passenger, Anthony T. Durham, Jr. of South Bend, was arrested on preliminary felony charges of dealing in a narcotic drug and carrying a handgun without a permit with a prior conviction.
They are each being held in the La Porte County Jail on a 50,005 cash-only bond through La Porte Superior Court 1.
Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
