Getting around North Judson by foot may become a little easier and safer over the coming years. The town council recently learned that INDOT plans to install sidewalks along State Road 10 for much of its length through the town, as part of an upcoming resurfacing and drainage project. Now, town officials are looking at adding sidewalks along some north-south streets to feed into the new State Road 10 sidewalk.
Council members voted last month to pursue a project that would add sidewalks along the west side of George Street from State Road 10 south to Weninger Street and the west side of Garfield Avenue from State Road south to Campbell Drive. A new sidewalk along Weninger would connect those sidewalks with the Town Park.
A formal application to INDOT to cover 80 percent of the $948,000 estimated cost with federal funding could be finalized at tonight’s council meeting. If approved, the work would not be scheduled to take place until about 2026.
Council President John Rowe hopes the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation would be willing to help fill in some of the remaining gaps. “I mean, people will walk these roads all the time,” Rowe said. “What I thought about is the kids that come – because we want to work with going towards the school even more by the bus garage and all that and connect all that – so when the kids go to Burger King, of course, the can walk a sidewalk that’s actual sidewalk all the way there, around by the park.”
The State Road 10 upgrades are not expected to take place until at least the summer of 2022.
