Starke County Council Discusses Sheriff’s Retirement Fund

The Starke County Council members considered their annual contribution into the Sheriff’s Retirement Fund Monday night.

Calculations of funds going into the retirement funds are complicated and Starke County Council President Dave Pearman said a lot of counties in the state are having an issue with how the fund contributions are figured and county contributions.  He commented that there may be legislation in 2021 concerning the retirement fund.

The number funded by the county fluctuates every year depending on a variety of variables including staffing, the amount the staff is paid, and the performance of the investments in the market.  The county pays into the retirement with casino money collected by the county, earned interest, officer’s contributions, and processing fees from golf cart registrations, and the county council.

For this year, the council voted to pay about $82,000 into the fund, but retirement fund remains short.  An additional appropriation will be advertised for that amount and it will be considered during the first council meeting in January.
