Bus Transportation Issues Prompt Change in LaCrosse High School Dismissal Time

LaCrosse High School students’ school day has been shortened by several minutes, due to bus transportation issues. The Tri-Township School Board recently voted to move high school dismissal to 2:30 p.m. for the second semester.

Superintendent Kelly Shepherd said that the teacher who previously shuttled high school students to the Wanatah School for transportation home is no longer able to do it. “So what’s happened for the last couple months is between myself or Mr. [Brian] McMahan or Mr. [Chris] McGowen, we’ve been utilizing one or two short buses and bringing our high school kids down,” Shepherd told board members. “Well, at least one of us, if not two, are also having to drive a route and get here and be in line. Long story short, those high school kids that need a ride down here, they’ve been having to leave last period class early.”

Rather than having some students leave school early, Shepherd recommended shortening classes for all students. “Now that we have 90-minute blocks, we figured between two to three minutes off each class period and a minute off the passing periods in between, we can back that dismissal time back to 2:30,” he explained.

In other business, the school board approved the replacement of an electronic valve on the Wanatah School’s boiler for a cost of $5,000. Shepherd said the existing valve had started to fail after 22 years of use.
