Culver Union-Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield asked the Culver Town Council members last week to approve funding for repairs made to a tanker truck.
He explained that a tanker truck could not pass pump tests. It was taken in for an estimated repair of $4,000, but he said more problems required more repair. Wakefield said the total bill ended up being $10,269.75. The council approved the claim as presented.
Wakefield added that an older grass truck is out of service. He stated that it would operate for about a quarter-mile and then it would quit. He took it in to be looked at, but at the time of the meeting he had not received word on the overall issue or the estimated cost.
Additionally, Wakefield said the helmets used by the firefighters are outdated which could lead to problems if someone gets hurt. The council approved Wakefield’s request to purchase new helmets for the active roster of firefighters at a cost of $4,698. They will arrive in four to six weeks from the time they are ordered.
He commented that his budgets have already taken a big hit to start 2021. Township Trustee Marlene Mahler chimed in to say that if any necessary needs come up at the end of the year and the fire department needs help with funds, there are funds in the township’s Cumulative Fire Fund to help with expenses.
