The Hamlet Police Department is working on adding new reserve officers. Town Marshal Clint Norem told the town council last week that one of his reserves has left the force, but about five others have expressed interest.
Some other challenges, though. “Some of the problem we’re going to have is, even if we had bodies, we don’t necessarily have the vehicles right now, without it turning into a logistical nightmare of having cars available,” Norem said.
He said he might consider hiring a part-time officer, but, for now, he wanted to wait and see about the budget.
In other business last week, Town Marshal Norem, Street Superintendent Kevin Leinbach, Town Attorney Martin Bedrock, and Town Council President Dave Kesvormas were all reappointed to those positions. Jason Cox remains the water operator, while Jason Clemons was reappointed as wastewater operator. Council Member Brian Earnest will continue to represent Hamlet on the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission.
The town council decided to hold off on an appointment to the Starke County Economic Development Foundation Board of Directors until the foundation actually requests a representative from Hamlet. The appointment is often a matter of uncertainty for town officials, since Hamlet isn’t actually a member.
