N.J.-S.P. Superintendent Credits Classroom Reconfigurations for Reducing Quarantines

The North Judson-San Pierre school superintendent is expressing optimism with the school corporation’s COVID-19 numbers.

“It feels like we’re doing better than we were right there before Christmas,” Dr. Annette Zupin told the school board Tuesday. “I know in the county, we’re probably doing the same, but at school, since we’ve been back from Christmas, it feels like we’re doing better.”

She said the classroom reconfigurations made at the junior/senior high school over Thanksgiving break still seem to be working. She said some classes have spread out, while others have moved to the cafeteria or the middle school science labs. “It seems like the last one we had, the close contact tracing, the only issue was at lunch,” Zupin explained, “and that’s a table of four and not six or eight.” Fewer close contacts mean fewer students who have to stay home and quarantine.

Zupin continues to send families weekly updates on new COVID-19 cases each Wednesday via school messenger. Case counts are also updated on the Indiana Department of Health’s school dashboard each Monday, based on the previous week’s data.

Meanwhile, the school board agreed to continue letting teachers access any unused paid time off related to COVID-19 that would otherwise have expired December 31. What happens if teachers use up all 10 days will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Many other local school corporations have recently taken similar action.
