The City of Knox is looking to have more control over the placement of driveways. The city council passed an ordinance Tuesday requiring all new driveways in residential or commercial zones to be at least 12 feet away from the adjoining property line.
Council President Jeff Berg said it would also set spacing requirements based on the road’s speed limit. “For instance, 200 South/Palmer Road and U.S. 35, 45-mile-an-hour speed limit right there, okay? If anything goes to the west, that driveway is going to have to be at least 350 feet from that intersection,” Berg explained.
Installing driveways on streets close to their intersections with State Road 8 or U.S. 35 would also require approval from the city’s planning administrator. If a driveway can’t be installed according to the new standards, the landowner may petition the Knox Board of Zoning Appeals. Berg said the regulations were recommended by the city’s planning commission. “This is for safety,” he said. “It gives the planning administrator, definitely, some parameters to start with, and it’s a start for all of us here, this ordinance. It’s been a long time coming.”
The city council suspended the rules and passed the ordinance on all readings.
