Starke County EMS Director Requests Ambulance Base Generators

Starke County EMS Director Travis Clary asked the commissioners last week to purchase generators for the ambulance bases.

With the weather-related power outages experienced in the area over the New Year’s holiday, Clary suggested purchasing generators for the buildings to ensure safety of staff and safe storage of medications.

“Specifically at our Grovertown base, they were out of power for several hours,” explained Clary.  “Our Dispatch Center was able to contact NIPSCO and kind of bump us up on the list.  I know we approached this several years ago, but I would like to look into generators for our stations.”

Starke County EMS has ambulance bases in Knox, North Judson and Grovertown.

He contacted a local contractor who recommended an automatic generator so there is no labor involved in getting it started.

A rough estimate is about $6,500 per installed generator, but no purchase was approved at last week’s meeting.

Clary will gather quotes for next week’s joint meeting with the Starke County Council and Commissioners.
