Drivers on U.S. 35 in LaPorte County Saturday afternoon found themselves sharing the highway with a herd of cattle. The Holstein calves took off from their home near U.S. 35 and County Road 500 South, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. An off-duty deputy reportedly spotted the herd running southbound in the northbound lanes. When the calves got to U.S. 6, they continued eastbound.
Deputies say some were corralled into a fenced-in area near U.S. 6 and 700 South, while the rest continued to head east on U.S. 6 to Range Road. Two groups went into a field near Range Road and 800 South. The rest were reportedly corralled on Range Road.
The Sheriff’s Office says it took the help of deputies, several volunteer firefighters, Good Samaritans, and the owners to catch the calves.
