State Still Working on Issue with Death Certificates

Indiana Department of Health officials continue to work out issues involved with the state’s new birth and death certificate registry.

During Governor Holcomb’s press briefing last week, State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box explained that the new online registry was instituted at the beginning of the year when Adobe Flash was set to expire at the end of 2020, along with the previous reporting system.

“There were a few deaths, actually 900 deaths, at the end of 2020 that we have had issues getting that to come over into our new registry in 2021,” said Dr. Box.  “We’ve been going over those one by one, but we are now in the process of instructing our funeral directors and local health departments across the state to actually take those from the old system and start a new record in our new drive system.”

Dr. Box said she believes that will help clean up records so families can have access to those records.

She added that not all providers have signed up to the new system which is another issue.

“We have a few kinks to work out, but what we need to do is get through this backlog of tickets and questions, but most importantly those that were left from 2020 and we have a path forward for that now.”

There are about 15,000 birth and death certificates already input into the system.
