The Knox City Police Department’s staffing shortage continues. Chief Harold Smith told the board of works Wednesday that the department is still one officer down, following the departure of Alyssa Smrt.
Board members had planned to approve a new hire at Wednesday’s meeting, but Mayor Dennis Estok says the candidate ended up withdrawing from consideration. On top of that, Smith says School Resource Officer Travis Schieber is active with the Army Reserves and is expected to be deployed for up to a year, starting around August.
Board members agreed to let Smith restart the hiring process and take applications.
