Starke County Commissioners to Look at Employee Use of County Cars

The Starke County Commissioners will look at insurance paperwork concerning the employees’ use of their own car while conducting county business.

Starke County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich brought up the issue Monday night and asked the commissioners to think about encouraging county employees to use the county’s two available vehicles for use on county business.  The cars can be signed out for trips to conferences or other county-related needs and then signed back in when business is complete.

The county’s insurance consultant, Carrie Block, stressed when employees use their own cars to drive to events where they are representing the county at a conference, or for other business, and an accident occurs, their own insurance is the primary coverage for that vehicle.  If the employee uses the county vehicle, the county’s insurance is the primary coverage for that vehicle.

The commissioners will review more paperwork from the insurance carrier to look into the issue further.
