Knox Man Killed, LaPorte Man Injured in Monday’s Crash on U.S. 35

A Knox man was killed and a LaPorte man was hurt in Monday’s crash on U.S. 35. It happened just before 11:45 a.m. between LaPorte and Michigan City.

LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies believe Corbin Gayheart, 51, of Knox, was driving northbound in a 2015 Volkswagen. He reportedly drove left of center and crashed head-on into a Dodge pickup truck pulling a trailer in the southbound passing lane.

Gayheart was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, Michael A. Meyer, 55, of LaPorte, had to be extricated and was later taken to a hospital.

Police don’t know why Gayheart’s vehicle went left of center. Toxicology test results are pending, and the crash remains under investigation. The crash had U.S. 35 closed for about three-and-a-half hours Monday for investigation and cleanup.
