A broadband internet company is exploring the possibility of bringing fiber optic service to Knox. The city council recently agreed to let Surf Broadband Solutions take a survey to see how many residents would be interested and what they’d be able to pay.
Surf President Gene Crusie told council members that the company is partnering with Kankakee Valley REMC to use some of its fiber. Fiber would then have to be installed through every street to reach homes and businesses. The installation would come at no cost to the city, but Surf would ask for a streamlined permitting process to access the right of way.
Crusie said customers could generally expect to pay $65 to $95 a month for speeds ranging from 100 megabits to one gigabit, unless the city chips in to make it more affordable. He said Surf is currently working on a fiber project in LaPorte, and plans are in the works for LaCrosse and Wanatah.
Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Lisa Dan said fiber access is huge, not only when it comes to attracting industries but also for retaining residents who now have the option to work from home. Mayor Dennis Estok felt it would be good for residents to have another choice.
