North Judson-San Pierre to Go after Income Tax Refunds to Collect Unpaid Debt

North Judson-San Pierre will now be able to intercept state income tax refunds to collect unpaid debt. The school board last week approved a memorandum of understanding for the Tax Refund Exchange and Compliance System (TRECS), after members generally voiced their support last month.

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that under the system, claims exceeding $25 will be submitted to a clearinghouse. “And from there, the clearinghouse works with the Department of Revenue in Social Security numbers, where they live, how they will obtain their refund and get that back to us,” Zupin explained.

Knox, Eastern Pulaski, and Oregon-Davis schools have also signed on in the past couple months. TRECS has been used by counties, cities, and towns for years.
