The Pulaski County Veterans Treatment Court and Family Treatment Court are joining in the celebration of National Drug Court Month.
Drug courts have been helping over one million people and their families for almost 30 years.
According to Pulaski County Court Program Coordinator Dr. Natalie Tucker, problem-solving courts are designed to intensively engage the participant and the justice system together. The pairing provides consistent and continual daily and weekly contact with the participant, monitor treatment and therapies, and to provide support and encouragement.
Those who complete the programs are less likely to re-offend.
Pulaski County Superior Court Judge Crystal Kocher stated in a press release that cases involving substance abuse continue to rise, along with overdose deaths. Drug courts can help residents suffering from abuse and get them on a positive, productive path.
Pulaski Circuit Court Judge Mary Welker commented that “families who complete family treatment court are much more likely to remain sober”.
There are more than 4,000 treatment courts in the United States now that serve 150,000 people, but over 1.5 million have been served over the past 30 years.
National Drug Court Month is coordinated by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.
