West Central School Board Discusses Staffing

The West Central School Board discussed several details concerning staffing during their meeting last week.

First of all, Superintendent Dan Zylstra said all non-certified staff will be getting a raise.

“We’re raising all of our hourly employees by fifty-cents an hour and then a little bit more for certain people who have taken on more responsibility,” stated Zylstra.  “As you are aware, the labor market is doing strange things now.  We want to make sure that our pay is competitive so we can hang on to our good people in those non-certified positions.”

Meanwhile, some reductions in force may be on the table.

Zylstra commented, “Even though the State has increased their projections for our tuition support next year we have lost a significant number of students so we’re trying to make sure that our staff-to-student ratio is maintained at a reasonable level.  We’re hoping to reduce by attrition as people leave, but there is that possibility into the future of a reduction in force.”

The school board will be making those tough decisions as they review personnel items.
