The City of Knox may be able to save some money by switching trash pickup companies. Republic Services’ bid for solid waste and recycling services came in significantly lower than the one from the city’s current contractor, Waste Management.
Under the proposed three-year contract presented during Tuesday’s city council meeting, Republic Services would charge a monthly fee of $14.15 per home for the first year, going up to $14.72 the second year and $15.30 the third year. Waste Management’s bid was over five dollars a month more.
Still, Council President Jeff Berg said city officials still need to look through the lengthy bid documents before a final decision is made. “As our current contract will expire on July 31st, I will emphasize that these bids with their benchmarks and specifications will be subject to audit and review prior to any recommendation for award,” Berg said.
Council members agreed to take the bids under advisement.
