Knox Reminds Residents of Fireworks Ordinance

Summer is a time for celebrations, but setting off fireworks on the wrong day in the City of Knox could cost you hundreds of dollars in fines. Fireworks are only allowed June 29 to July 9, plus New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, under the city’s ordinances.

They may only be used between 5:00 p.m. and two hours after sunset, but hours are expanded on July 4, to 10:00 a.m. to midnight. Mayor Dennis Estok notes that violators may be fined $100 for the first offense, going up to $500 for the third and repeat offenses.

Meanwhile, Dave Pearman with the Starke County Emergency Management Agency notes that ground fuel is currently very dry, and the risk of fires could get worse. He urges residents to be cautious with fireworks, bonfires, and other burning.
