North Judson-San Pierre’s fourth, fifth, and sixth grades will move to the former middle school while the elementary building is under construction, and that means those students will get to use lockers. A locker policy was included in the 2021-2022 elementary school student handbook approved by the school board Tuesday.
Principal Cary McCay explained that while students will be using lockers, they won’t be allowed to use actual locks. He said that proved easier for kids in his past experience. McKay said the school’s security cameras should deter any theft, and students will be discouraged from keeping valuables in the lockers, anyway.
The school board also approved an updated handbook for some of the school corporation’s support staff. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said non-certified employees will now be able to carry over vacation days from one year to another. “We have not done this in the past,” she explained. “But last year with COVID and this year with the construction projects, if they would rather be here and help us out, then we don’t want them to have to ‘use it or lose it,’ and so we’re allowing them to carry some over because you just have those circumstances.”
Zupin said the updated non-certified handbook also clarifies who has to go to work during inclement weather and eLearning days, and replaces Presidents’ Day with New Year’s Eve on the list of paid holidays.
