Prairie Trails Club Reaches Easement Agreement with Railroad Owner

The Erie Trail has secured a path from North Judson to LaCrosse. Steve Lucas with the Prairie Trails Club says the group has finalized an easement with the new owners of the Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad.

“We now have a final, written document, so we have an agreement,” Lucas told the North Judson Town Council Monday. “It’s a big step forward. It’s just a step.”

He said the Prairie Trails Club is looking at applying for the next round of Next Level Trails grants. The next step will likely be to figure out the exact scope of any potential project.

“I think the first thing we need to do is figure out what route we’d like to do, what is possible in terms of geography,” Lucas explained.

He said the Prairie Trails club wants to coordinate with various town officials and the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum, to figure out what would work best. A Next Level Trails grant would require a 20-percent local match, but Lucas noted that what qualifies is pretty broad.
