Third Dose of COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Approved for Immunocompromised Individuals

A third dose of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised has been approved by the CDC, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the FDA.

While a doctor’s order is not required, Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch recommends consulting with a physician before the third dose is administered.

Patients who are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised and have completed a two-dose series of a COVID-19 vaccine can receive a third dose at least 28 days after the second dose.

If patients received the two-series Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, the third dose should be the same as the two-dose series. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has not been approved for multiple doses.
