Masks Still Optional at North Judson-San Pierre Schools

Masks will remain optional at the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, at least for now. During Tuesday’s school board meeting, Board President Derrick Stalbaum said they’re not planning any changes to the COVID-19 policies at this time.

“It’s very clear that we have two options: do what we’re doing or wear masks and it’s lesser quarantine times and contact tracing,” Stalbaum said. “At this point, it’s still the recommendation of the superintendent to stick with how we are.”

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that while contact tracing is cumbersome, it isn’t unfeasible at this point, a concern that Eastern Pulaski school officials cited in their mask decision this week. “When it becomes an issue is when we don’t have the number of students we need to conduct school, when we don’t have enough staff members to conduct, and that hasn’t been the case yet,” Zupin said. “So we will monitor this on a regular basis.”

Starting Friday, North Judson-San Pierre will post a weekly COVID-19 update on its website. Zupin said there have been a total of 19 cases among students, teachers, and staff since the start of the school year, with three active cases this week.
