An electric police vehicle could soon be patrolling the streets of North Judson. Town Marshal Kelly Fisher has been looking into adding a Tesla to her department’s fleet.
“Tesla also said that we could test the car. We could set something up where we could test it, obviously not in a pursuit or anything, but driving it, see how efficient it would be in charging and if it’s going to be where the battery’s going to last the 12-hour shift, and so forth.”
She told the town council during their last meeting that a standard rear-wheel drive model with a range of 262 miles per charge would cost about $36,000, while a longer-range all-wheel-drive model would be $10,000 more. But Fisher estimates the annual cost of electricity would be less than a fifth of what they currently spend to fuel one of their existing vehicles, and maintenance costs would also be significantly lower.
Council members agreed to let Fisher schedule a test.
