The North Judson Town Council members continue to research several aspects of a potential purchase of a Tesla for the North Judson Police Department’s fleet of police vehicles.
The electric vehicle would be the first of its kind on the fleet, if the council members agree to buy one. Town Marshal Kelly Fisher previously told the council that the annual cost of electricity is estimated to be less than a fifth of what the town currently spends to fuel one of their existing vehicles, and maintenance costs would also be significantly lower.
Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe and Councilwoman Jane Ellen Felchuk recently test drove a Tesla, but Rowe said more information will be gathered before a purchase is considered.
“What we spend in fuel, repairs and routine maintenance versus what the cost up front will be for how long those batteries last which is quite a bit longer than what I had assumed. Our council president, John Rowe, wanted to take the time to put some information – details together and get that out to the public. We want to make sure they have the correct information and we want to hear their opinions.”
That information will be available in the next few weeks so members of the public can make comments during a meeting about the purchase.
