Community Services of Starke County Public Transportation drivers were recently recognized with Frontline Hero awards.
Executive Director Cindy Benke stated that Community Services of Starke County was presented with the Rural Mobility Champion Award during the 24th National Conference on Rural Public and Intercity Bus Transportation. All drivers across the nation were deemed frontline heroes during the conference, and Benke commended the local drivers who “put themselves on the line during the pandemic without complaint.”
Congratulations to Transportation Director Gail Staerkel and drivers Corbett Stamper, Rose Raderstorf, Michael Denney, Mary Myer, Joseph Loretto, and Ron Ottow.
Benke added that there is a driver shortage, but attempts are being made to accommodate needs. She asks that 24 hour notice be given for a ride, if possible, for better scheduling. For more information, call 574-772-7070 to schedule a ride.
Meanwhile, the Community Services of Starke County has been blessed this holiday season with several donations.
Benke noted monetary donations were made on behalf of several local organizations to assist the county’s older population and low-income residents. Several hundred pounds of food have been donated to help those who utilize the food pantry, including donations from the Hamlet Boy Scouts and the Knox Student Council. The Gary Literacy Coalition donated over 150 books for children ages 1-13 that are being distributed through the food pantry.
In addition to these donations, Benke thanks all who have donated their time to help those in need this holiday season.
