Starke County Commissioners Look to Appoint New County Attorney

The Starke County Commissioners and the Starke County Council members are looking for a new county attorney after Marty Lucas expressed his desire to not be reappointed to the position.  He has served as the county attorney for 10 years.

Lucas said he will still be serving in the capacity of attorney, but not for the county.

During the joint Starke County Commissioners and Starke County Council meeting Monday, they spoke with Justin Schramm about a possible appointment to the position.  He currently serves as the attorney for the Town of North Judson and has served in that position for the last five years.  He also is the counsel for the Town of Winamac.

Commission President Charlie Chesak, Council President Dave Pearman and Council Vice President Brad Hazelton talked with Schramm prior to the meeting to iron out some details, including working as the attorney for the Starke County Park Board.

Pearman said there would be an annual retainer for Schramm of about $48,000.

Schramm said he would like to talk with Lucas about a few things before he accepts an offer of appointment.

The council and commissioners unanimously approved a motion to appoint Schramm as the county’s attorney, pending Schramm’s acceptance.
