The pool at the West Central School Corporation is in need of improvements.
The pool is 40 years old and is in need of better humidity control, updated surfaces, Outdoor Step Handrails, and deck drain cleaning and repair.
Superintendent Dan Zylstra told the school board members last week that he met with a swimming pool construction service who specializes in swimming pool repairs.
“We talked about scoping the drains and we’re probably not going to do that,” explained Zylstra. “His concern is there’s enough buildup of minerals in those drains that if we ran the scope through it would actually, potentially, crack the pipe and cause a leak now.”
He added that the chemical room was updated 20 years ago, but it needs another upgrade as technology has improved, along with the processes with ventilation.
Zylstra noted that since there is not a swim team at the corporation, the pool could be made more shallow, but he addressed a question from board member Mandy Sharpe about the use of the diving board.
Zyltra commented, “That would be the question, right? What do you use your pool for? We use it primarily for swim lessons, not for diving. So, there would be options that might create cost savings as part of that process, too. That would be discussions on what we need to do. Regardless, the swimming pool construction project is going to be pretty expansive when we eventually get to it.”
More discussions will be held concerning improvements at the pool in upcoming meetings.
