A La Porte man was arrested in the overnight hours Saturday after the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department investigated a two-vehicle accident in the area of County Road 600 West, south of U.S. 20.
Officers reportedly learned from one driver that he received a call from his son that the vehicle his son was driving was stuck in the snow. Police say the father went to the location and helped free the vehicle from the snow. The son reportedly left and began traveling north on County Road 600 West. The father proceeded to pass the son’s vehicle on County Road 600 West and slow down, and it was then when the son’s vehicle rear-ended the father’s car, according to the report.
The son, 44-year-old Steven D. Copner of La Porte, was later located at a service station. Police say he was found to be impaired and was transported to the La Porte County Jail. Copner faces a preliminary misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was later released after posting bond.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
