The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is the recipient of a $13,500 grant from Lowe’s to participate with SkillsUSA through the National SkillsUSA Total Participation Plan.
According to the organization’s website, SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It serves middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
At Oregon-Davis, every student in grades 7-12 will be a registered SkillsUSA member. That membership will allow the students to participate in various contests in leadership and technical skills areas, and receive a quarterly edition of the SkillsUSA Champions magazine.
The Oregon-Davis Chapter will be organizing school-wide activities that include community service and fundraising. A small number of students will be competing this spring in the Opening and Closing Ceremony, pin design, t-shirt design, cabinet making, and carpentry.
Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Bill Bennett told the school board members recently that Industrial Technology Instructor Joe Veger was instrumental in securing the grant for this endeavor.
Bennett commented, “I know he came to us with some really big ambitions and some goals and I like to see that. Kudos to him and the programs he’s bringing us.”
Junior/Senior High School Principal Bettie Jo Awald also commended Joe Veger for his efforts.
