The last in a series of three public hearings is scheduled for tonight which will give community members in Knox, Hamlet, Center Township and Davis Township information on the potential formation of a Fire Protection Territory.
A Fire Protection Territory allows for an increase in property taxes in order for a fire department to gather revenue to afford various needs. The maximum fire levy has been reached in Center Township that services the Knox-Center Township Fire Department and in Davis Township that services the Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Department. Since that maximum levy has topped out, there is no other chance to gather revenue to fund necessities within the departments.
The public hearing in Knox is at 6 p.m. CT tonight at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center. The public hearing in Hamlet is at 7:30 p.m. CT at the Community Center in Hamlet. Tippecanoe Township Trustee Bill Jones from Tippecanoe County will explain the funding structure of the Fire Protection Territory in both Knox and Hamlet and the firefighters will discuss needs within their respective departments.
