Fundraisers will soon be underway for a new K9 for the Knox City Police Department.
City Police Chief Harold Smith asked the Board of Works members for permission to start the process.
“We’re wanting to add another K9 for the Department for our night shift,” explained Smith. “Sergeant [Chad] Dulin is currently our K9 officer on day shift and there are many times at night that he’s called out for the night officers. We currently are funding our K9 through donations.”
Chief Smith said summer events where they sell food are good fundraisers for the K9. He said events like the Fun Day in Park in Knox in July and the Bass Lake Fest can bring in some money for the additional K9. An officer is currently available on the department to become a K9 handler for the night shift.
Chief Smith said he will also reach out to area businesses to ask for donations and community donations would be accepted at any time. Smith said about $10,000-$11,000 is needed for a new K9.
The Knox Board of Works unanimously approved the request for fundraising.
