An inmate being held at the La Porte County Jail was successfully captured after reportedly escaping from the facility late Tuesday night.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, a Jail Division Supervisor received a call from a resident around 11:30 p.m. CT who reported suspicious activity on the east side of the jail. Deputies reportedly observed several pieces of bedding material tied together hanging from a top floor window.
In the moments that followed, La Porte City Police Officers received information that a nude man was seen in the 600 block of Lincolnway. Officers located the man in the same area behind some buildings. He sustained injuries consistent with a fall, according to the report.
Police say the man was identified as 43-year-old Desmond L. Robinson who has been incarcerated in the La Porte County Jail since April 11, 2022, on a Level 5 Felony charge of burglary and a revocation related to a Level 5 trafficking offense in 2017.
Robinson was taken to the hospital for the treatment of his injuries.
An investigation into the escape is ongoing, along with an internal review of the incident and a comprehensive security check of the jail.
Police say all other inmates were accounted for and housed in their cells.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
