North Judson to Apply for Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant

The North Judson Town Council, North Judson Park Board and the North Judson Redevelopment Commission will be putting in a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant application by the June 1 deadline for Town Park projects.

North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe said the town council approved a decision Monday night to work with The Troyer Group to assist with the application and help consult and advise the town through the process.  The North Judson Redevelopment Commission is expected to consider the same action in a joint meeting with the council on Monday, May 9.

Rowe said The Troyer Group has worked with the town to submit the Five-Year Master Plan to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and they have worked on preliminary cost estimates to come up with the first phase of proposed projects.

The town hopes to apply for up to $500,000, which is the maximum allowable amount through the grant, with a 50 percent match from the North Judson Redevelopment Commission, if the commission approves it on May 9.

Rowe said The Troyer Group’s recommendation of the first phase of projects was what town officials had initially decided.

“It’s mainly our Town Park and mainly the area of the playground, all the way to the basketball court and the addition of a sand volleyball court and two pickleball courts with a picnic shelter area added at the Town Park,” said Rowe. “Of the main Town Park area, it’s that whole southeast section.”

Rowe added some other features are planned in this phase of work.

Rowe continued, “It would include new sidewalks, an accessible playground, a natural playground area, redo our basketball court and reseal that, a permanent cornhole, and also a walking trail around the outline of the north side of the park.”

The town is already in the middle of adding sidewalks on the south side of the Town Park along Weninger Street, George Street to State Road 10.

In-kind donations will be discussed with Utility Superintendent Joe Leszek.

The entities will continue to work on the application and submit it by the end of this month for the DNR’s consideration for funding.
