Oregon-Davis Updated on Basketball, Playground Projects at Elementary School

The Oregon-Davis School Board members approved a quote to redo the basketball courts at the Elementary School.

Superintendent Bill Bennett commented that they got quotes for a concrete surface and an asphalt surface.  He recommended the asphalt surface, not only for the $40,000 cost savings but it is easier to maintain. The board approved the asphalt quote.

The surface will be redone, along with the installation of new hoops.

The basketball court project is part of phase one of an overall playground project.  Mulch and timbers will be going in soon, along with new swings.  It will take a little time for the swings to arrive. The sidewalks were removed and new concrete installed.

The Oregon-Davis PTA is looking to begin a patronicity campaign to assist with fundraising efforts for more phases of the project.  Patronicity, in partnership with the Indiana Housing and Community and Development Authority, would match up to $50,000 if the school can raise up to $50,000 in a 30-60 day window.

Committee Member Stephanie Ferch said if they went with a patronicity fundraising effort, the community would need to have access to the playground.  Bennett said he would contact the corporation attorney to discuss it.   A letter from the superintendent and permission from the Building Corporation is also needed.

Ferch commented in a previous meeting that the second phase tentatively scheduled for next year will include new equipment.  A climbing web is included in preliminary plans, as well as an activity court, playground markings, new swings, Kindergarten cabins, Kindergarten swirls, and a rubberized surface.  She noted that a local patron has offered to build the cabins which could be installed yet this summer.

Preliminary plans also include a walking track and an outdoor pavilion or classroom.

More information on fundraising efforts for upcoming phases of the playground equipment will be coming in future meetings.
