A Union Mills woman passed away following a car vs. train accident in La Porte Tuesday morning.
According to a La Porte City Police Department report, a witness told police that the vehicle driven by 19-year-old Kaylie Pacione of Union Mills reportedly went around the active downed railroad crossing guards at Orchard Avenue and 2nd Street in La Porte when an eastbound Norfolk Southern train struck the vehicle at about 7 a.m. CT.
Pacione was found to be deceased at the scene, according to the report. Police say she was the lone occupant in the vehicle.
Two trains were stopped at the crossing headed both eastbound and westbound until the scene was cleared.
The La Porte City Police Department was assisted at the scene by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, La Porte County Deputy Coroner, and Ace Towing.
