Hammond Woman Arrested after Failing to Stop for Hamlet Police Officer

A Hammond woman was arrested in the evening hours Wednesday, September 21 after allegedly failing to stop for police near the intersection of U.S. 30 and 600 East in Hamlet.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, Hamlet Chief Deputy John Lynch was patrolling the area when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle reportedly continued to travel east on U.S. 30 until stopping at the intersection with 1200 East.

Chief Deputy Lynch and K9 Rem performed an open air sniff of the vehicle when police say the K9 indicated to the presence of an illegal substance.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Tanya T. Bell, had a minor child in the vehicle, according to the report.

Bell was detained and transported to the Starke County Justice Center where she faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement by fleeing, reckless supervision of a child, reckless driving, and possession of a controlled substance.

Police say the minor child was placed into the care of a family member pending an investigation by CPS.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
